Green Vintage Tea Tin by Douwe Egberts for Pickwick Tea

  • Manufacturer: Bekkers Dordrecht Holland
  • Production period: 1950 – 1955

Product Description:
This green metal tea tin, manufactured by Bekkers Dordrecht Holland between 1950 and 1955, was designed for storing Pickwick tea. It is both a decorative and functional household item from the post-war era—a time when packaging and presentation were gaining importance.

Features and Construction:
The tin is made of green lacquered metal and features a scalloped, removable overlapping lid. Four small feet are subtly integrated into the bottom seam, giving the tin both stability and a distinctive silhouette. The body seam is folded rather than welded, indicating a solid, seamless construction.

The tin is decorated with pink floral motifs scattered across a dark green background. At the center of the lid is an oval vignette depicting horsemen in a cityscape with a tower and trees. This scene is framed with a delicate gold border, lending the piece a classic and refined appearance.

Dimensions:

  • Height: 7.5 cm
  • Length: 16.5 cm
  • Width: 11.5 cm

Use and Practical Function:
Originally intended to store loose-leaf Pickwick tea—introduced by Douwe Egberts in 1937—this tin’s raised base helped keep contents dry even on damp surfaces. Its decorative appeal makes it still perfectly suited for use as a storage container or collectible item today.

Condition:
The tin is in vintage condition and shows signs of use and wear appropriate to its age. The photos provide an accurate representation of its current state.

Historical Context:
Douwe Egberts was founded in 1753 as a colonial goods store in Joure, the Netherlands. In 1937, the Pickwick tea brand was launched, named after Charles Dickens’ Pickwick Papers—a suggestion from the director’s wife at the time. The name and the packaging design, often featuring English stagecoach imagery, were intended to evoke the traditional British tea experience.

Noteworthy Details:

  • – Original 1950s edition
  • – Rare footed base construction
  • – Authentic Pickwick imagery

This tin combines cultural and historical value with decorative appeal, making it a meaningful item for collectors and vintage enthusiasts alike.
