Product Description:
This vintage tin canister, created for the Dutch retail chain DE GRUYTER, is a stunning example of retro design, decorated with reproductions of paintings by renowned Old Masters. The rectangular tin features a folded longitudinal seam and a hinged lid with loop hinges and loose tabs. The gold-colored base combined with the classic artworks on the sides gives the piece a timeless appearance.

The lid shows The Village School by Ferdinand de Braekeleer, while the front and back display Village Fair by David Vinckboons. The shorter sides feature Interior with Peasants by Cornelis Dusart. These carefully selected artworks reflect the rich tradition of 17th- and 18th-century Dutch painting.

On the bottom of the tin, you’ll find DE GRUYTER’s famous embossed slogan: “En betere waar En 10% Alleen De Gruyter” – a nod to the retailer’s customer-friendly 10% discount policy from the past.

  • David Vinckboons (1576–1632), an influential painter of the early 17th century, was best known for his peasant landscapes and biblical scenes. His style was influenced by Pieter and Jan Brueghel the Elder.
     
  • Cornelis Dusart (1660–1704), a follower of Adriaen van Ostade, was a master of genre scenes and peasant interiors, admired for his finely detailed engravings and paintings.

De Gruyter was a popular Dutch retail chain that operated from the 19th century through the early 20th century. At its peak, the chain had over 550 stores and employed around 7,500 people. Known for its customer-friendly approach, De Gruyter offered promotions like a 10% discount with returned receipts and the legendary "Snoepje van de Week" (Treat of the Week) for children.
