Product Description:
This tall, rectangular tin is a fine example of historic shop packaging, produced between 1925 and 1928 by N.V. Dordrechtsche Metaalwarenfabriek v/h Wed. J. Bekkers & Zoon. Originally, it was used as a storage tin for Van Melle’s toffees and was employed in shops to present the confectionery in an attractive manner.

The tin features rounded corners and a hinged lid adorned with the Dutch coat of arms, accompanied by the inscription "JE MAINTIENDRAI." The sides are richly decorated with floral patterns and detailed illustrations of various birds, including a peacock and an ara. The back bears the Van Melle logo, along with the brand name and factory details: "N.V. VAN MELLE'S Confectionery Works BRESKENS (HOLLAND) ROTTERDAM - AMSTERDAM."

The tin was crafted using tin-plating, bending, and riveting techniques, with a decorative transfer print for the illustrations. The material consists of tin, steel, and iron, with dimensions of 28.5 cm in height, and 15.5 cm in both width and depth.

With its intricate design and sturdy construction, this tin is not only a functional storage container from the early 20th century but also a remarkable collectible, offering a glimpse into the rich history of the Dutch packaging industry and advertising.

Historical Context
Van Melle, a well-known Dutch confectionery brand, used decorative tins as both promotional tools and functional packaging. The detailed illustrations and sturdy design made these tins not only practical for storage but also popular as collectibles.

Van Melle started as a bakery in Breskens around 1840, where sugar balls were sold. In 1900, Izaak van Melle began the mechanical production of these sweets. His brother Dirk-Machiel expanded the range in the 1920s to include biscuits and wafers, including the famous Mariakaakje.

In its efforts to explore international markets, Van Melle sought out new recipes, which led to the introduction of toffees in 1926 and the now world-famous Fruittella and Mentos candies, inspired by Polish caramel sweets. The company grew rapidly, finding markets far beyond its borders.
