Verkade: A Historic Brand

Founded on May 2, 1886, by Ericus Gerhardus Verkade, Verkade began as a steam-powered bread and biscuit factory, “De Ruyter,” in Zaandam. The name "De Ruyter" referred to the first windmill in West-Zaandam. In its early years, Verkade produced bread, rusks, honey breakfast cake, and Langetjes, with wax candles later being added to their range. Today, Verkade is mainly known for its cookies and chocolate products. The logo with the name "De Ruyter" still evokes the brand's origins.

Nasturtium as a Decorative Element

The nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus), an annual creeping and sometimes climbing plant, is a recurring decorative element on this tin. The leaves of this plant resemble a heraldic shield, which explains why its botanical name is derived from the Latin word "tropaeum," referring to a victory tree adorned with weapons. The flowers, leaves, and seeds of nasturtium are edible and have a sharp, horseradish-like flavor. They are sometimes used as a spice, and the flower buds and green fruits can be pickled.

This Verkade tin is not only a functional storage container but also a historical collectible, reflecting a piece of Dutch industrial and culinary history.
