Verkade: A Dutch Heritage
Verkade is one of the most recognizable brands in the Netherlands, founded on May 2, 1886, by Ericus Gerhardus Verkade. The company's first products were bread, biscuits, ontbijtkoek (spiced gingerbread), and Langetjes (small biscuits), and later expanded to include tealights. Over time, the brand grew and specialized in cookies and chocolate. The original logo refers to the "De Ruyter" windmill in West Zaandam, honoring the brand's historical roots.
Nasturtium (Tropaeolum Majus)
Nasturtium is an annual plant from the Tropaeolaceae family, known for its creeping or climbing nature. The leaves, which often resemble a shield, are edible and have a sharp flavor reminiscent of horseradish. The flowers, leaves, and seeds of nasturtium are used in cooking, such as in marinades or as a spice. The use of this plant in the design of the Verkade biscuit tin adds a natural and lively atmosphere to the classic product.
These vintage Verkade biscuit tins with the unique nasturtium design are not only functional items but also a collectable pieces of historical value, showcasing a fine example of 20th-century Dutch industrial design.
