Brocante Tin Box by Driessen Chocolates – A Historic Collector’s Item

  • Manufacturer: A. Driessen
  • Manufacture Date: 1945–1970

Product Description:
This elongated, rectangular tin box by Driessen, originally designed for Carro's chocolates, is a remarkable example of functional and aesthetic packaging design from the early to mid-20th century. This nostalgic piece combines practical use with the rich history of the Dutch chocolate industry.

Features and Specifications:

  • Material and Construction:
The tin features a hinged, seamless lid with an attached hinge. The bottom and side seams are riveted, contributing to its durability. Notably, the lid is embossed with 28 chocolate mold designs, featuring the Carro brand name, a subtle nod to the product the tin once contained.

  • Design:
The decoration consists of a brown base with gold accents, including the edges, lettering, and the underside and interior. The text on the tin emphasizes its origin and quality: DRIESSEN CHOCOLAAD CARRO'S, Made in Rotterdam, Holland. Net 1/2 kilo. The bottom displays the embossed company name: NV Cacao- & Chocolaad Fabrieken A. Driessen.

  • Dimensions:
    • Height: 4.6 cm (1.81 inches)
    • Length: 28.3 cm (11.14 inches)
    • Width: 10.7 cm (4.21 inches)

Historical Background:
The A. Driessen brand, founded in 1820 in Rotterdam, played a key role in Dutch chocolate production. With cocoa imported from Suriname, the factory produced high-quality products, earning the prestigious title of royal supplier in 1871. The company thrived during the 19th century and expanded its production capacity. However, economic crises and rising raw material prices in the 20th century led to its acquisition by Kwatta in 1935.

This tin is not only a functional item but also a tangible piece of history, with traces of its journey through time.

Condition:
The tin is in vintage condition, with signs of use and age-related wear. These imperfections contribute to the authenticity and charm of the item. Photos provide a detailed view of its condition and are part of the description.

Historical and Decorative Value:
This Driessen tin box is not only a collector’s item for enthusiasts of historical packaging and chocolate heritage but also a decorative piece that fits perfectly into a brocante interior or vintage collection. The combination of historical value and unique design makes it a remarkable item that has withstood the test of time.
