Van Melle, founded around 1840 in Breskens as a bakery, began its path to success with the production of sugar balls. In the mid-19th century, Izaak van Melle introduced the machine production of these popular sweets. In the early 1900s, several other confectionery products were developed, including toffees and fruit caramels that made Van Melle world-famous under the brand names Fruittella and Mentos. The company expanded into international markets, and in 1935, it even acquired the first corporate airplane in the Netherlands. After the devastating bombings in 1944, production resumed in Rotterdam in 1946.
