History of Albert Heijn:
Albert Heijn, originally hailing from the Oostzaan-based Heijn family, took over his father’s grocery store in 1887. The first branch opened eight years later in Purmerend, and in 1899, the Central Warehouse was established in Zaandam. The Albert Heijn brand grew steadily, and in 1920, the “Company for the Exploitation of Factories and Trading Businesses” was founded. By 1927, the chain celebrated its 40th anniversary and had become a Royal Warrant Holder. Albert Heijn continued to innovate, opening the first self-service store in 1952.
