  • Manufacturer: Wed. J. van Nelle
  • Design: Jac. Jongert (Wormer 1883 - Reeuwijk 1942)

Product Description:
This vintage shop tin from the Van Nelle brand, manufactured between 1930 and 1935, is a prime example of early 20th-century Dutch Design. Designed by Jac. Jongert, it combines functionality with a modern aesthetic, which set Van Nelle apart in the market at the time. The tin was originally used by shops to store coffee and tea and was loaned to retailers by Van Nelle. This particular tin is in the iconic colour combination of red and yellow, with clean lettering in white, red, and blue.

Design and Features:
The tin is constructed with a seamed side, rolled edges, and a lid with a handle, secured by wrap-around hinges. The printing is divided into a yellow section at the bottom and a red section at the top, a style that reflected modernity and progress in the 1930s. The text "VAN NELLE VOOR KOFFIE EN THEE" ("Van Nelle for Coffee and Tea") is prominently displayed on the sides and the lid, playing a key role in Van Nelle's branding.

Condition:
This shop tin is in vintage/brocante condition, showing signs of use and wear typical of its age. The bottom corner is loose and may be restored if desired. The tin is best considered as a decorative item, with visible signs of extensive use over time. Please refer to the attached photos for a detailed view of its condition.

Dimensions:

  • Height: 37 cm
  • Length: 42 cm
  • Width: 28 cm

Historical Context:
Van Nelle, founded in 1782 in Rotterdam, became a leading brand in coffee, tea, and tobacco. Known for its pioneering advertising campaigns and innovative product development, Van Nelle built strong trade relations and owned plantations in the Dutch East Indies, establishing itself as a major player both in the Netherlands and abroad. This tin, designed by Jac. Jongert, reflects the modern and ambitious spirit of the company in the 1930s.

This Van Nelle shop tin is not only a well-preserved piece but also a collectable item that tells a story of Dutch industrial history.
