Historical Context:
Albert Heijn Sr. came from the Heijn family in Oostzaan. In 1887, he took over his father Jan Heijn’s grocery store in the Kerkbuurt of Oostzaan. Eight years later, he opened the first branch in Purmerend, followed by a Central Warehouse in Zaandam in 1899. In 1911, he laid the foundation for the company’s own production facilities in Zaandam, where they began roasting coffee and baking cookies.

In 1920, the Maatschappij tot Exploitatie der Fabrieken en Handelszaken (Company for the Operation of Factories and Commercial Enterprises) was established. Seven years later, in 1927, the chain had 107 branches and received the title of Royal Warrant Holder. In 1952, Albert Heijn opened its first self-service store in Schiedam, a major milestone in the evolution of the chain.

This vintage tin is not only a practical item for storing cookies but also a valuable collectable that reflects a piece of Albert Heijn’s rich history.
