Octagonal Vintage Tin with Lid for BRINTA Porridge by Honig

  • Manufacturer: Brinta - Honig
  • Date of Manufacture: 1950 - 1990

Product Description:
This octagonal tin with a lid, produced between 1950 and 1990, is a representative example of the packaging for BRINTA porridge by Honig. BRINTA, an acronym for "Breakfast Instant Tarwe" (Breakfast Instant Wheat), is a popular Dutch breakfast product that originated in 1944. Developed by Frederik André Möller, the product is made from crushed wheat mixed with a small amount of salt, resulting in a fibre-rich breakfast porridge (containing 10.5 grams of fibre per 100 grams of uncooked product).

Features and Specifications:

  • Shape and Dimensions: The tin is octagonal and measures 11.7 cm in width and length, with a height of 17.0 cm. The lid is domed with a rolled edge, providing a secure seal and protection for the contents.

  • Manufacturing: The tin features a seamed longitudinal joint and bottom decoration, and it is topped with a removable lid that is securely held in place by folding edges, support points, and closure tabs.

  • Decoration: The exterior is adorned with pastoral scenes in greenish pastel tones, illustrating the entire wheat production process—from ploughing and sowing to harvesting, threshing, and milling. These illustrations highlight the natural origin and traditional values of BRINTA porridge.

  • Text and Content: On two sides of the tin, gold-coloured lettering displays slogans such as "delicious breakfast variations" and "the healthy dessert." The tin holds 500 grams and lists the manufacturer, Honig, Koog aan de Zaan, as well as the product BRINTA, known for its health benefits derived from whole wheat kernels.

  • Condition:
The tin is in good condition with light signs of use and some wear, which is normal given its age.

BRINTA porridge was introduced in the Netherlands with a striking American-style advertising campaign. In 1963, the product achieved peak brand recognition when Elfstedentocht winner Reinier Paping famously described his meal as "light fare," helping to popularize the slogan "a bowl of Brinta." This tin offers a historical glimpse into the presentation and marketing of this fiber-rich breakfast product.
