Van Nelle: A Rotterdam Pioneer

Van Nelle was founded in 1782 by Johannes van Nelle and his wife Hendrica in Rotterdam, where they began selling coffee, tea, and tobacco. After Johannes died in 1811, his widow took over the business. Later, the business was continued by Johannes van Nelle Jr. and his brother-in-law Abraham Goedkoop under the name "De Erven de Wed. J. van Nelle." In 1837, the Van der Leeuw family joined as co-owners and eventually took over the entire ownership.

Under the leadership of Jacobus Johannes van der Leeuw, the company grew into a global player in the coffee and tea trade. Van Nelle expanded its operations with its plantations in the Dutch East Indies and specialized in coffee roasting and tea processing. The brand distinguished itself through innovative advertising campaigns, such as the campaign for Piggelmee. Despite the challenges of World War II, the company recovered under the leadership of J.P. Coelingh in the 1950s and introduced Van Nelle Supra in 1962, the first vacuum-packed ground coffee. This marked a new success in the brand’s history.

Van Nelle remains a symbol of craftsmanship and innovation in the coffee and tea industry, with a heritage still valued today.
