Historical Background of Albert Heijn:
Albert Heijn began his retail empire in 1887 when he took over his father's grocery store in Oostzaan. The first branch opened in Purmerend, followed by the establishment of a central warehouse in Zaandam in 1899. Starting in 1910, Albert Heijn began selling products under its brand and laid the foundation for its production companies in Zaandam in 1911. These companies produced a wide range of products, including coffee, biscuits, rusks, and liquorice. In 1920, the "Maatschappij tot Exploitatie der Fabrieken en Handelszaken" was founded, of which Anton Jurgens bought a share but later sold it.

Albert Heijn expanded into a well-established chain in the 1920s with 107 branches and became a purveyor to the royal household. In 1952, the company opened its first self-service store in Schiedam, inspired by an earlier initiative in Nijmegen. Since 1965, Albert Heijn has used its current logo, designed by James Pilditch and John Harris, featuring the recognizable interlocking A and H letters in blue.

This storage tin not only provides a glimpse into the history of Albert Heijn but also into the development of the Dutch retail sector. It is a valuable item for collectors and history enthusiasts alike.
