Vintage Verkade Tin "Falcon Hunt" - Refined Packaging with Stylized Illustration of a Lady on a White Horse

  • Manufacturer: Nederlands Vereenigde Blikfabrieken
  • Manufacture Date: 1950s - 1960s

Product Description:
This rectangular vintage tin, produced by the Nederlands Vereenigde Blikfabrieken, served as distinctive packaging for Verkade products and was designed with a focus on export. The tin features rounded corners and is characterized by a removable lid that rests on the rim. The bottom is inwardly crimped, enhancing the durability and functionality of the design.

Features:

  • Decoration: The tin has a blue background and is adorned with a detailed illustration of a noble falconer riding a white horse with a red blanket. The falconer is dressed in medieval attire, holding a falcon, with a white dog running beside the horse. These medieval hunting motifs refer to the noble hunting tradition "De Valkenjacht," where falcons were used, unlike hawks and sparrowhawks used by commoners.
  • Sides: The sides of the tin are decorated with a red border and gold details, reflecting the colours and patterns of the horse's blanket.

Condition:
The tin is in very good vintage condition with minimal signs of use and light aging. The attached photos provide an accurate depiction of the tin's condition.

Dimensions:

  • Height: 5.7 cm
  • Length: 25.5 cm
  • Width: 17 cm

This tin not only offers functional packaging but also a beautiful piece of history and design from the past.

Koninklijke Verkadefabrieken N.V.: A Cornerstone of the Dutch Food Industry

Koninklijke Verkadefabrieken N.V., founded in 1886 by Ericus Gerhardus Verkade, has a long and rich history in the Dutch food industry. Located in Zaandam, the company played a key role in the development of the food sector in the Zaan region. Originally known for its production of rusk, cookies, and chocolate, Verkade also temporarily expanded its range to include tea lights.

Verkade's reputation as a producer of quality products such as Digestives, Nizza, and San Francisco cookies, as well as chocolate, has given the brand a special place in Dutch culture. In 1950, Verkade was granted the designation "Royal," recognizing its significant role and contribution to Dutch society.

In 1990, Verkade made a significant strategic shift when it became a subsidiary of the British food company United Biscuits. This acquisition marked a new chapter in Verkade's history, allowing it to maintain its heritage and quality while expanding its operations internationally.
