This vintage tin comes from the Swedish brand Zwaluw, which has been known for its matches since 1895. The tin is adorned with four old rhymes depicting domestic scenes:
- "Anneke brings wood for the stove, Mother strikes a 'Zwaluw,' because it's cold at home."
- "Pipe’s stopped, no more fuss. A 'Zwaluw' to cheer Gerrit up."
- "Aunt Agaath, very neat, knows how to make coffee sweet. With a 'Zwaluw' every time. 'Quality and good atmosphere.'"
- "When it's cold and bleak in winter, cosy by the open fire. A 'Zwaluw' without fail, ensures a good mood."
These rhymes, along with illustrations of domestic scenes, give the tin a nostalgic and cosy appearance.

Historical Background of Matches:
The history of matches dates back a long time. The Chinese not only invented gunpowder but also the match. As early as 950, pinewood sticks impregnated with sulfur were used. This "light-bringing stick" even dates back to the year 577. Romans also used similar sticks, and around 1530, sulfur sticks reappeared in Europe.
The modern safety match (Swedish: säkerhetständsticka) was invented in 1844 by Swedish chemist Gustaf Erik Pasch. He developed a match head containing antimony sulfide, manganese dioxide, and potassium chlorate, which could be safely ignited on a specially prepared striking surface of glass powder and red phosphorus.
J.E. Lundström and A. Sjöberg from Sweden improved this process and patented an industrial production method in 1855, which made the mass production of matches possible.
Conclusion:
This vintage matchbox tin from the Zwaluw brand is not only a functional item but also a piece of history. With its nostalgic designs and rhymes, it brings a touch of bygone times into your home. Its good condition makes it a valuable collectible for enthusiasts of vintage items and historical memorabilia.
