From Origin to Nostalgia: The History of Albert Heijn and De Zaanse Schans

The origins of the Albert Heijn chain date back to May 27, 1887, when Albert Heijn took over his father Jan Simonsz Heijn's grocery store in Oostzaan. This takeover marked the establishment of the first store under the name Albert Heijn. Although the official transfer took place on May 1, 1887, the festive transfer was celebrated on May 27, the wedding day of Albert Heijn and Neeltje de Ridder. This date is considered the beginning of the store with the Albert Heijn brand, as confirmed by archival research by De Jager.

Over the years, Albert Heijn developed a series of nostalgic cookie tins as part of their advertising and marketing efforts. These tins were often decorated with images of De Zaanse Schans. They aimed to capitalize on the appeal of history and remind customers of the charm of Dutch culture and history. The iconic windmills and traditional wooden houses of De Zaanse Schans served as an attractive theme for these various tin product packages.
