Background Information:
Piggelmee is a fairy tale character well-known in the Netherlands through the children's book series published by Van Nelle. Written by L.C. Steenhuizen, these picture books depict the adventures of the gnome couple Piggelmee and Tureluur. They live in an old Cologne pot, and their stories often revolve around Van Nelle coffee. A magic fish in the tales even emphasizes that there is no better coffee than that of Van Nelle.

History of Van Nelle:
Van Nelle was founded in 1782 by Johannes van Nelle and his wife Hendrica in Rotterdam, starting as a shop selling coffee, tea, and tobacco. After Johannes van Nelle's death and later his widow's, the business was continued by their son Johannes van Nelle Jr. and his brother-in-law Abraham Goedkoop. From 1837, the company was fully owned by the Van der Leeuw family.

Under the leadership of Jacobus Johannes van der Leeuw between 1837 and 1881, Van Nelle expanded significantly, establishing global trade contacts and owning plantations in the Dutch East Indies. Van Nelle became a prominent manufacturer of coffee, tea, tobacco, and cigarettes. Despite the challenging period around World War II, the company flourished again in the 1950s under the direction of director J.P. Coelingh. A significant milestone was the introduction of the first freshly ground vacuum-packed coffee, Supra, in 1962.

Conclusion:
This vintage tin is not just a beautiful collectable but also a piece of Dutch coffee history, with charming Piggelmee reminding us of the timeless quality and tradition of Van Nelle coffee.
