Jodenkoeken:
A jodenkoek, often referred to as Jodekoek in trade, is a large, flat cake made of shortcrust pastry with a diameter of about 10 cm. Early mentions of Jodenkoeken date back to 1872, when confectioner C. Strunck advertised these cakes in the Java-Bode. In 1873, there was an advertisement by the confectioner and biscuit baker Foppe Egbertus de Haan from Groningen in the Leeuwarder Courant.
Historical Background:
The production of Jodenkoeken in Alkmaar dates back to 1883 when bakery Stam was established at Houttil 36, just behind the Waag. In 1924, this bakery was taken over by Dirk Davelaar from Zaandam, leading to the founding of Davelaar Koeken. The company still exists today and celebrated the centenary of the Jodenkoek in 1983.
Conclusion:
This vintage tin of Davelaar Jodenkoeken serves not only as a practical storage solution but also as a piece of history. Featuring beautiful images of the Alkmaar windmills, it is collectable for enthusiasts of local history and traditional baked goods. The Jodenkoek itself, with its rich history and delightful taste, remains a beloved product bridging generations.
