Assam Tea
Assam black tea originates from the Indian state of Assam and has been enjoyed worldwide since 1838. However, in its first 25 years, it couldn't compete with the Japanese and Chinese varieties that had been enjoyed in Europe since the 17th century. But today, about half of India's total tea harvest comes from Assam, making it even more popular than Darjeeling and Nilgiri, the other significant Indian teas.
Assam tea is harvested twice a year: during the 'First Flush' right after winter and during the 'Second Flush' towards the end of spring. Tea from the First Flush has a lighter colour and taste. Assam is known for its versatility in blends, as different types of Assam blend well together and it also pairs well with other types of tea. This makes Assam a favourite ingredient in blends such as English Breakfast and Irish Breakfast.
