Van Nelle: Rotterdam Pioneer in Coffee, Tea, and Tobacco
In 1782, Johannes van Nelle and his wife Hendrica opened a shop at Leuvehaven in Rotterdam for coffee, tea, and tobacco. After Johannes died in 1811, his widow continued the business until she died in 1813. Johannes van Nelle Jr. and his brother-in-law Abraham Goedkoop took over under the name "De Erven de Wed. J. van Nelle". In 1837, after Johannes Jr.'s death, the Van der Leeuw family became co-owners and later sole owners.

Under Jacobus Johannes van der Leeuw, the company grew between 1837 and 1881. He expanded with global trade contacts and owned plantations in the Dutch East Indies, transforming the shop into a coffee roastery and tea processor. Van Nelle prospered through its focus on coffee and tea.

Van Nelle distinguished itself with unique advertising, such as Piggelmee. The Second World War was difficult, but under director J.P. Coelingh, the company recovered in the 1950s. In 1962, Van Nelle introduced Supra, the first freshly ground vacuum-packed coffee, further increasing its success.
