Founded in 1932 by Adriaan van Well, De Spar grew into an international chain of supermarkets. The name "De Spar" has several possible origins, from an abbreviation for "Through United Cooperation Everyone Regularly Benefits" to a more accidental choice, possibly inspired by a fir tree that Van Well had drawn. Despite these variations, De Spar remained a recognizable brand with a green-circled fir tree logo, designed by Raymond Loewy in 1968.

Interesting Facts:

  • Although originally founded in the Netherlands, De Spar quickly expanded to other countries, including Germany and Italy.
  • In some countries, such as Italy, the name "De Spar" is retained, while in others, the article is omitted.
  • The French translation of "De Spar" is "Le Sapin," which is also found in some Spar stores with a liquor section.

This vintage anniversary tin not only offers a glimpse into De Spar's past but is also a collectible for enthusiasts of historical supermarket memorabilia. With its unique design and meaningful background, this piece of history adds a touch of nostalgia to any collection.
