Albert Heijn - The Supermarket History
Albert Heijn Sr., hailing from the Oostzaan Heijn family, took over his father Jan Heijn's grocery store in 1887, located in the Kerkbuurt of Oostzaan. Eight years later, he opened his first branch in Purmerend, and in 1899, he established a Central Warehouse in Zaandam.

Albert Heijn's own brand was born in 1910, and the company's own production facilities began in 1911, also in Zaandam, where they started roasting coffee and baking cookies in the kitchen of an old mansion. Factories were established along the Zaan for biscuits, liquorice, coffee, tea, wine, and other products. In 1920, the "Maatschappij tot Exploitatie der Fabrieken en Handelszaken" was established. Anton Jurgens, of Anton Jurgens' Margarinefabrieken N.V. (one of the predecessors of Unilever), bought half of the ordinary share capital (although he sold it again in 1927 after a disagreement with Mr. Heijn). In the same year, son-in-law Johan Hille and sons Jan and Gerrit Heijn took over the management.

In 1927, exactly 40 years after its founding, the retail chain had 107 branches and was awarded the predicate "Hofleverancier" (Supplier to the Royal Household). Anton Jurgens was bought out.

Albert Heijn Sr. passed away in 1945 at the age of 80, and three years later, the company went public.

In 1952, Albert Heijn opened its first self-service store in Schiedam, following Gebroeders van Woerkom, who opened the very first self-service store in the Netherlands on November 26, 1946, in Nijmegen.

Albert Heijn's current logo dates back to 1965 and was designed by James Pilditch and John Harris of the branding agency AID. Prior to that, in the twenties, the company used a logo in which the letters A and H were intertwined. In the late thirties, the letters stood side by side, with the slogan "for quality" underneath. After Albert Heijn was appointed as supplier to the royal household, the corresponding coat of arms was added to the supermarket chain's logo from the fifties onwards. Since 1966, Pilditch's logo has been used, featuring the intertwined A and H executed in blue.
