Product description:
This vintage Zassenhaus wall-mounted coffee grinder, manufactured by PéDé between 1936 and 1960, is a true piece of coffee history. Once an item from the Douwe Egberts gift shop, this beautiful grinder is now a sought-after collectable that embodies the charm and innovation of bygone eras.
Mounted on a wooden board, this wall-mounted coffee grinder exudes timeless elegance. At the top sits a cream-coloured ceramic reservoir for coffee beans, sealed with a graceful wooden lid. The Douwe Egberts logo, 'D.E.,' and the text "COFFEE" adorn the reservoir, evoking a nostalgic atmosphere. A manually rotating handle operates the grinding mechanism, with the ground coffee falling into a collecting container. Originally, the container was glass, but in this grinder, it has been replaced with a hard plastic one.
Innovation in a classic package:
When introduced in 1936, this coffee grinder was progressive and innovative. The manual hand crank allowed for effortless grinding of coffee beans, long before electric grinders became widely available. Even into the 1960s, this grinder remained popular despite the rise of modern electric alternatives.
Condition:
This vintage wall-mounted coffee grinder is in excellent condition, with minimal signs of use and only a few age-related signs of wear. Photos are available to depict the condition in detail.
Dimensions:
The total height of the grinder is approximately 35 cm, with a width of about 13 cm and a depth of 18 cm.
Historical significance:
Douwe Egberts, originating from Joure, has a rich history dating back to 1898. The company was a pioneer in customer loyalty through a points system, allowing customers to collect points for gift items. The Zassenhaus wall-mounted coffee grinder was one of the beloved gifts, first for practical use and later as a decorative object.
This vintage Zassenhaus wall-mounted coffee grinder not only offers a tangible link to the history of coffee enjoyment but also invites visitors to grind fresh coffee beans themselves, serving as a vibrant reminder of the timeless traditions of Douwe Egberts.
