Background:
The history of Cliever's Sugar Works, founded by Louis Johannes Gillet in 1916, has seen both highs and lows. Despite bombings during World War II and floods during the 1953 North Sea flood, the factory rose again. However, the story also reveals a complex side, as Louis Gillet was a member of the N.S.B., the Arbeidsfront, and the N.V.V. Parts of the factory were used for N.S.B. events and as a kitchen during the war. After the war, Gillet spent some time in an internment camp. Nevertheless, he returned as director, celebrated the 40th anniversary, but ultimately, Cliever's sugar works disappeared. This toffee tin carries not only history but also a complex story with it.
