"Le Lapin: The Timeless Beauty of HEMA's Vintage Whistling Kettle Design from 1990"
- Manufacturer: HEMA
- Designer: Nikolai Carels
- Manufacturing Date: 1990
Product Description:
The Le Lapin vintage whistling kettle, winner of the 1990 HEMA design competition, is a unique piece of design. Created by HEMA and designed by Nikolai Carels in 1991, this award-winning whistling kettle is characterized by an innovative closing mechanism.
With the name 'Le Lapin,' the design of the whistling kettle indeed evokes the image of a rabbit, with the lid protruding like a floppy ear above the body. At the top of the kettle sits a tall, curved wooden handle, referencing the rabbit and nature in terms of material and color. The elongated sliding whistle is made of plastic, has a blue circle at the end, and a round hole at the bottom for steam to escape.
This design classic, known as "Le Lapin" ("The Rabbit"), is the winning design from the 1990 HEMA design competition and was the first to be actually produced. Nikolai Carels, a graduate of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Industrial Design, stands behind this design.
Since 1985, HEMA has been organizing an annual design competition for students, with the Le Lapin whistling kettle being the most famous winner from 1990. This kettle has been sold in HEMA stores since 1991.

The fourth HEMA design competition produced one of the most well-known whistling kettles in the Netherlands: Le Lapin, also known as the rabbit whistling kettle. Made of stainless steel with a wooden handle and a sandwich bottom, this kettle features a special alloy suitable for induction cooking. It has a capacity of 1.75 liters.
The design by Nikolai Carels from 1989-1990 is still highly regarded as a remarkable HEMA product. Carels, a graduate of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Industrial Design, has left a lasting impression with his design.
Industrial design, also known as industrial (product) design, involves designing products that are mass-produced. Examples include vacuum cleaners, coffee makers, walkers, laptop bags, and office chairs.
