The rich history of chocolate in the Netherlands is briefly highlighted, from traveling with the Duke of Alva to the emergence of coffee and chocolate houses in the 17th century. Dutch chocolate manufacturers, including Baronie, A. Driessen, Droste, Verkade, Rademaker, Union Edel Chocolade, Van Houten, Venz, and Tony's Chocolonely, are mentioned. Attention is also given to Tjoklat, a no longer existing Dutch brand founded in 1925 as Holland(sch)-Zwitsersche Chocoladefabriek Amsterdam.
After the war, the factory, then known as Tjoklat-Fabriek NV Amsterdam, gained its greatest fame. In 1984, Baronie-De Heer took over the chocolate factory in Vlaardingen, but the brand name and the recognizable Tjoklat logo continue to be used to this day.
