Niemeyer BV, once a thriving family business stemming from the trade in colonial goods, was founded in 1819 by Meindert Niemeijer. Starting as a tobacco trade, the company evolved into its own production of plug tobacco, under the brand 'Het Wapen van Rotterdam.' After being taken over by son Theodorus Niemeijer, the company expanded into production for other brands, including 'de Bijenkorf' and 'de Tabakshandel,' as well as the production of coffee and tea.

During the challenging years of the Great Depression in 1932/1933, the company switched from cigarettes to coffee and tea. In World War II, Niemeyer survived by producing coffee and tea substitutes under the name Savora.

Throughout the twentieth century, the company grew steadily, acquiring tobacco manufacturers in Groningen and entering international markets. Despite increasing competition from Douwe Egberts, Niemeyer had to cease coffee and tea sales in the 1960s. Nevertheless, this vintage tin remains a tangible reminder of Niemeyer's rich history, a symbol of craftsmanship and perseverance.
