Van Nelle: A Rich History of Coffee, Tea, and Tobacco

The Rotterdam-based manufacturer Van Nelle has built an impressive history as a producer of tobacco, cigarettes, coffee, and tea. It all began in 1782 when Johannes van Nelle and his wife Hendrica opened a shop at Leuvehaven in Rotterdam. After Johannes' passing, his widow and brother-in-law continued the business until their deaths in 1813.

Johannes van Nelle Jr. and his brother-in-law Abraham Goedkoop then took over and operated the business under the name "De Erven de Wed. J. van Nelle." In 1837, the Van der Leeuw family acquired a share in the company, and by 1845, Van Nelle was entirely in the hands of this family.

Under the leadership of Jacobus Johannes van der Leeuw, the company flourished between 1837 and 1881. He established global trade contacts, initiated plantations in the Dutch East Indies, and transformed the shop into a factory for coffee roasting and the processing of tobacco and tea. By the end of the 19th century, coffee and tea became increasingly important, and Van Nelle achieved great success. The company distinguished itself with a unique approach, featuring notable advertising characters like Piggelmee.

The Second World War brought challenging times for Van Nelle, but from the 1950s, under the leadership of director J.P. Coelingh, the company recovered. The introduction of the first freshly ground vacuum-packed coffee, named Supra, in 1962 played a crucial role in this recovery.

In 1916, Van Nelle purchased land along the Schie in Overschie, where the world-famous Van Nelle Factory was built, designed by J.A. Brinkman and L.C. van der Vlugt. This architectural masterpiece, constructed between 1927 and 1929, became an emblem of modern architecture.

On October 1, 1954, the last Van der Leeuw withdrew from the management, and Van Nelle became a public limited company. After a long-standing collaboration, the American Standard Brands acquired all shares of Van Nelle in 1977. In 1985, the company regained full independence through a management buyout. Ultimately, in 1989, Van Nelle was acquired by the competitor Sara Lee/Douwe Egberts, which closed all production facilities and reduced Van Nelle to a brand name with a rich legacy.
