The Origin and Rise of SenO: A Household Plastics Pioneer

In 1955, the story of Schouw and Oostwoud, later known as SenO, began with a chance meeting between Harry Schouw and Marten Oostwoud in Bilthoven. Harry, returning from Argentina with a technical background at Philips, and Marten, a business expert from the family business Oostwoud in Franeker, crossed paths at Hotel-Café-Restaurant De Schouw near the Bilthoven station.

The gentlemen devised a plan to manufacture plastic products with a self-built injection molding machine. Thus, in 1955, Schouw and Oostwoud was born, located at Biltseweg 20 in De Bilt. Their first customer was the game factory Jumbo, known for the Goose Board Game, followed by the Turkstra Beschuitfabriek from Leeuwarden.

As the company grew, a new factory was built at Industrieweg 24 in Maartensdijk, where the production of plastic products for household use was in full swing. The range included butter dishes, cups, egg cups, colanders, coffee filters, salad utensils, and clothespin baskets, as well as sticks for the Mikado game.

SenO had a dominant position in the market, with 1500 points of sale in the Netherlands and representations abroad, including England, Norway, Switzerland, Germany, and the Dutch Antilles. The strategic value of the molds, manufactured in Portugal and Denmark, was underscored by their storage in a fireproof safe.

Although the company was widely known in the Netherlands for the variety of products sold, the name SenO remained unfamiliar to many. In 1974, the company was sold to Rosedale in England, later acquired by Tiger Plastics in Geldrop. The name changed to SenO Plastics BV, and production continued until 1996 in Maartensdijk. Afterward, production moved to Geldrop and later to Poland.

After the sale, Marten Oostwoud remained involved in the family business Oostwoud in Franeker and passed away in 1989. Harry Schouw, no longer associated with SenO after the sale, moved to France and passed away there in 1992. Thus ended the chapter of SenO, a pioneer in household plastic products.
