Emsa: 65 Years of Innovation and Sustainability in Consumer Goods

For more than 65 years, Emsa GmbH has been recognized as a leading German manufacturer of consumer goods, kitchenware, garden essentials, and garden accessories. It all began on April 1, 1949, when Franz Wulf founded the company as "Franz Wulf & Co Plasticware Factory" in the picturesque town of Greven, Germany.

Emsa's first successful product was a small drip catcher, artistically shaped like a butterfly and crafted from durable plastic. After this modest start, the company expanded its range to various kitchen accessories, including baking tools and ice bags. Emsa's growth was undeniable, and on October 1, 1956, it moved to a larger facility in Emsdetten, where floristry tools were also added to the product lineup.

On December 29, 1964, the company's name was changed to "Emsa" as a tribute to the town of Emsdetten and the nearby river Ems. This marked a new chapter for the company, which continues to thrive due to its ongoing commitment to innovation and quality.

Since 1971, the distinctive red dot logo has adorned Emsa's products, a symbol of trust and quality recognized worldwide. Emsa's slogan, "Think smart, be happy," reflects the brand's philosophy which has remained unchanged over the years.

What truly sets Emsa apart, in addition to its long history and reliable products, is its continuous pursuit of innovation and functionality. The brand is not only a pioneer in smart designs and contemporary colours but also focuses on sustainability. Emsa is committed to creating entirely sustainable collections, delivering not only high-quality products but also caring for people and the environment.

Dive into Nostalgia: Iconic Plastic Design Items from Emsa in the 60s and 70s

In the heyday of the 60s and 70s, Emsa brought a wave of colourful and revolutionary plastic design to households worldwide. These iconic pieces, infused with innovation and a touch of retro charm, are still beloved and find a new home in the Retro & Design online store. Let's explore some of these timeless items.

The Rotating Snack Tower: A true symbol of the vibrant 60s and 70s is the famous plastic snack tower. It consisted of a set of four multicolored snack bowls, supported by a stainless steel rod with a striking yellow ball on top. Thanks to the rotating bowls, the tower took on a different shape, making it not only functional but also visually appealing. Yellow, orange, red, and dark red shone on many party tables.

The Plastic Snack Dish: Another favourite from the Flower Power era was the plastic snack dish. With five compartments, the middle one specially designed for pretzels or dip, this dish brought together colour and functionality. The inner compartments often came in vibrant colours like red, orange, beige, or green, while the outer shell had a charming wood-like appearance. A perfect addition to any party or casual gathering.

The Recognizable Plant Watering Can: Who doesn't remember the handy plant watering can with a ribbed top and bottom? With a slim, elongated spout and the distinctive Emsa logo at the bottom, this watering can was both practical and charming. A comfortable grip made watering a pleasure, and it added a touch of colour to both home and garden.

Colourful Dinnerware: In addition to these iconic pieces, Emsa offered a wide range of colourful dinnerware in the 60s and 70s. Egg cups, butter dishes, salt and pepper sets, plates, and much more were available in the most beautiful colours, turning every meal into a celebration of colour and cosiness.
