Brabantia was founded in 1919 in the Dutch town of Aalst by a group of 15 people. With a firm belief in honest products, made by people with a heart for quality. Ideas focused on sustainability – designed for living.
Brabantia is a family business that has existed for more than 100 years. In 1919 the wholesaler of colonial goods Johannes Marinus van Elderen took over a tinware factory in Aalst and continued it under the name Van Elderen & Co., with 15 employees. In 1930 the name Van Elderen & Co was changed to: Metaalwarenfabriek Brabantia firm Van Elderen & Co. and from around 1941 the name Brabantia was mainly used.
The company has become a well-known manufacturer of household steel products. Brabantia products are designed to make everyday life easier and more beautiful, with a focus on sustainability and quality. Kitchen stairs, ironing boards, storage containers, lunch boxes and the like have been in production since 1950. In 1952 the first pedal bins were produced.
One of the most famous features of Brabantia were the many different designs in which their products were released. In 1969 the iconic Patrice print was introduced, designed by Patricia van Uden. The design with brown and fuchsia flowers on an orange background quickly grew into a seventies icon. In 1972 the first rotary clothesline was produced.
In 1985, the Brabantia Classic corkscrew was introduced and sold in the millions.
