SRV: From Mobile Supermarket to Nostalgic Heritage
The SRV, known in the Netherlands as the small mobile supermarket, originated in 1966 from a collaboration between various wholesalers, primarily supplying to the milk trade: Super, Ratio, and Knipkaart. The name 'SRV' originally stood for 'Samen Rationeel Verkopen' (Selling Together Rationally), but it was later revealed that it referred to the first three consonants of the word 'SeRVice.'
Originally established as a purchasing organization, the SRV later took the form of an innovative concept of a mobile supermarket. The brain behind this idea was Cor Boonstra, who was the sales manager at the Zuivel Handel Maatschappij at that time. From 1966 to 1974, Boonstra held the position of the first SRV director under chairman E.W. Heeremans. In the later years, SRV evolved into a retail formula with leaflets, saving coins, stamps, private labels, newspaper advertising, and even television commercials.
Unfortunately, the SRV formula was discontinued in 1995. The mobile store formula had been under pressure since the 1970s from supermarkets with extensive product ranges and the changing role of the homemaker. Nevertheless, as of 2019, there were still about 100 mobile stores in the Netherlands, mainly found in villages or residential areas where there is no longer a supermarket present.
