"Tasty Tradition: The Versatile World of Ontbijtkoek"
Ontbijtkoek, also known as gingerbread or spiced cake, is a Dutch and Flemish spiced pastry. The primary ingredient is rye, giving the cake a light brown colour. It is often flavoured with cloves, cinnamon, ginger, candied citrus peel, and nutmeg. Different parts of the Netherlands have their own local recipes, with the most famous being "oudewijvenkoek," primarily eaten in the northern regions and flavoured with aniseed. Traditionally served at breakfast with a thick layer of butter, it is a substitute for bread. Due to its sweet taste, it is also served as a snack. It is best enjoyed a day after baking. Ontbijtkoek is also found in Indonesia due to historical colonization by the Netherlands.
