"The Creative Wizard of Verkade: The Artistic Life Story of Cees Dekker"

Cees Dekker, born on January 23, 1900, in Zaandam and passed away in 1990, was a renowned Dutch artist with a remarkable career. His imprint on the Zaanse cookie factory Verkade, where he worked as a designer between 1923 and 1961, was unmistakable. His creative vision and talents left a lasting impression on countless packaging and advertising materials for the company.

In his early years, Cees grew up in a baker's family, where Vinkenstraat in Zaandam was the stage for the family bread shop. Although his surroundings destined him to follow the baking tradition, Cees had other plans. His heart longed for art, but his father, being practical, did not see it as a feasible future. To make a living, Cees started his career as an office clerk and even learned the trade of an accountant. However, his deeply rooted ambition was to become an artist.

The journey to his dream began with an art education at the Zaandam City Drawing School, where teachers like Willem Jansen and Jac. J. Koeman sharpened his artistic talents. He then continued his studies at the Hendrick de Keyzer School and the State Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam.

Cees' path to artistic success took a turn when he started working at the paper mill Hellema on the Oostzijde. His enthusiasm for his work grew, and he even got the opportunity to create designs. As a freelancer, he contributed to projects for Verkade, Hille, and Albert Heijn, until Verkade permanently hired him as a designer in 1923.

The Verkade family quickly recognized the importance of effective advertising, and under Dekker's leadership, the Verkade advertising studio became a breeding ground for creativity. Dekker's touch could be seen in numerous packaging and posters, including iconic advertisements for tea lights, biscuits, and long rusks. Famous creations such as the rusk baker from 1931 and the rusk tin with nasturtium bear his artistic signature.

In addition to his contributions to Verkade, Dekker developed his talents as a book cover designer around 1924. One of his early works was designing a cover for a program booklet of the Hollandsche Schouwburg in Amsterdam, with a subtle nod to Verkade's advertising. With his artistic legacy, Cees Dekker enriched the world of art and advertising, and his influence continues to live on in the creative history of the Netherlands.
