- Manufacturer: Vermaat's Modern Bakeries
- Manufacturing Date: 1976
Product Description
Vintage anniversary cracker tin from Vermaat's Modern Bakeries, released in honour of their 40th anniversary in 1976. This charming cracker tin features a timeless design with a loose-fitting lid and proudly bears the inscription "Vermaat 40 years 1936 - 1976."
The tin is subtly adorned with a beige background and a wide ochre-yellow border, finished with a light brown line both at the top and bottom. Furthermore, it is embellished with two beautiful photos: one of the picturesque Proveniershofje in Haarlem and the other of the impressive Amsterdamse Poort, a historic city gate that has withstood the test of time. It is interesting to note that several variants of this cracker tin were released, each featuring unique photos of well-known Haarlem locations.
Vermaat's Bakeries, once a prominent industrial bakery based in Haarlem, was founded in 1936 by Willem Vermaat. This decision coincided with the significant population growth in Haarlem between 1920 and 1940. To efficiently distribute his products, Vermaat introduced a pioneering concept of mobile bread shops that crisscrossed the streets and neighbourhoods of Haarlem. He was known for offering quality brown bread at a competitive price, leading to a true bread war among local bakers.

"Historic Sites in Haarlem: The Proveniershof and the Amsterdamse Poort"
The Proveniershof is a courtyard located at Grote Houtstraat 140 in Haarlem, which is known as the busiest shopping street in the city. While the Proveniershof has the characteristic layout of a courtyard, it distinguishes itself by not being founded by a guild, a wealthy individual, or a religious organization. The name Proveniershof refers to the fact that until 1866, a charitable home for elderly boarders (proveniershuis) was established here, but nowadays, there are apartments in the former charitable home.
The Amsterdamse Poort is a historic city gate in Haarlem, the Netherlands. It is located at the end of the old route from Amsterdam to Haarlem and is the only city gate that still stands among the original twelve city gates.
This gate was built in 1355 and is the sole remaining city gate from Haarlem's defensive fortifications. Until the 17th century, it served as the primary gateway for road traffic heading eastward, towards Spaarnwoude via the Laegheweg (now known as the Oude Weg). In 1631, the Haarlemmertrekvaart canal was dug, significantly shortening the waterway route between Haarlem and Amsterdam.
