"History and Tradition: Douwe Egberts and the Birth of Pickwick Tea"
In the year 1753, the beginning of an unforgettable journey sprouted when Egbert Douwes and his wife Akke Thijsses opened their grocery store "De Witte Os." Located on Midstraat in the picturesque town of Joure, they laid the solid foundations for two iconic brands: Douwe Egberts and Pickwick. In those early days, coffee, tea, and tobacco were the undisputed heroes of their inventory.
However, it was only in 1937 that Douwe Egberts introduced the world to Pickwick tea. In their search for the perfect name for their tea, they wanted something that reflected the English tradition of tea drinking. The atmosphere surrounding tea was strongly imbued with an 'English' charm and the wooden crates in which the tea was sold even featured images of English stagecoaches.
Coincidence or not, the wife of the then-director was fascinated by the literary works of Charles Dickens. After devouring "The Pickwick Papers," a masterpiece by Dickens, she proposed the name "Pickwick" as an inspiring choice for their tea. And so, Pickwick was born, a name that continues to symbolize the rich flavour and timeless pleasure of tea to this day.
The history of Douwe Egberts and Pickwick is intertwined with dedication to quality and an unwavering passion for creating moments of joy and togetherness. These brands are not only a part of our history but also of our hearts, where they continue to thrive and unite us with the warmth of delightful coffee and tea.
