"Dutch Tradition and International Expansion: The Story of Douwe Egberts"
Douwe Egberts (abbreviated as DE) is a Dutch company engaged in the processing and trade of coffee, tea, and various other food products. The roots of this company trace back to the year 1753.
The origin of Douwe Egberts lies in the decision made by Egbert Douwes and his wife Akke Thysses when they left Idskenhuizen and settled in the nearby town of Joure. On March 11, 1753, they opened a "store in colonial goods" there. Their assortment included products that contributed to everyday enjoyment, including groceries, chocolate, and dried fruits.
In 1780, the business was passed on to their son Douwe Egberts (1755-1806), whose name is still associated with the company today, and his wife Ymke Jacobs Visser. Under their leadership, DE specialized in processing and blending coffee, tea, and tobacco.
Under the inspiring leadership of Douwe Egberts' son, the company expanded beyond the borders of Joure. This not only made him the namesake but also the driving force behind the company's growth. After Douwe Egberts' passing in 1806, his second wife, Lysbeth Mintjes, continued to run the business.
A notable contribution by Douwe Egberts is the establishment of the Haulsterbossen (Haulster Woods).
After World War II, the company took the step towards international expansion by opening subsidiaries in France, Spain, Denmark, and starting from 1948, in Belgium.
