History of Van der Meulen Master Bakers
In the year 1910, Hessel van der Meulen decided to establish a small artisanal rusk bakery in Ferwerd. The high quality of his products quickly gained recognition in the northern part of the country. The demand for Van der Meulen Rusks grew steadily, necessitating expansion. The company moved to Hallum, where a spacious bakery specifically designed for rusks was built under the name "De Volharding."
In 1930, the second generation began exporting rusks to America, with the motto: "The more you eat the more you want!"
Hessel van der Meulen Jr., the third generation, took over in the 1960s, ushering in a new era of growth. In the early 1970s, Melba Toast was introduced, and the company started seriously considering export opportunities to England.
In 1985, the range of Rusks and Melba Toast expanded to include Rye Bread, following the acquisition of a rye bread bakery in Broeksterwoude. Export became an increasingly important source of income.
In the early 1990s, our current CEO, Johannes van der Meulen, assumed leadership. In 1997, the decision was made to focus on core activities: producing Rusks, Rye Bread, and Melba Toast. This transformation propelled Van der Meulen Master Bakers into an international enterprise with around 120 employees.
Today, Van der Meulen Master Bakers remain synonymous with quality and artisanal craftsmanship. With a rich history spanning over a century, the company continues to bring their delightful products to satisfied customers around the world.
