De Gruyter, a Dutch retail chain that flourished from the 19th to the 20th century until 1976. With over 550 stores and nearly 7,500 employees at its peak, De Gruyter was renowned for its superior goods and the iconic 10% discount offered upon presenting receipts. Their slogan "En betere waar èn tien procent, alleen De Gruyter" (Better quality and ten percent off, only at De Gruyter) became a household phrase.

The Legendary "Snoepje van de Week" (Candy of the Week)
To bond with and indulge their customers, in 1948, De Gruyter introduced the iconic "Snoepje van de week." After World War II, when sugar was rationed and there was a surplus of sugar, they decided to surprise children with small gifts. With a few guilders' worth of groceries, children received candy as an unsolicited treat. This tradition, born out of care for their customers, created unforgettable memories and strengthened the bond between De Gruyter and the community.
