Kanis & Gunnink: A Dutch Coffee Story
In the year 1880, a shop specializing in oriental goods was founded in Kampen by Hendrik Kanis. Frans Gunnink soon joined the team. In 1885, after meeting Paul Krüger, the South African president, Gunnink considered resigning and emigrating to South Africa to become a teacher. At that time, Paul Krüger was in the Netherlands to seek support for the Boer Republic. However, Hendrik Kanis did not want to lose Gunnink and offered him a co-directorship in the company. Thus, the firm Kanis & Gunnink was born.
Over the years, the company grew, and in 1920, the assortment was expanded with tea. In 1923, the company transformed into a public limited company with the new name N.V. Stoomkoffiebranderij en Theehandel Kanis en Gunnink. In 1928, co-founder and director Frans Gunnink passed away.
To attract and retain customers, Kanis & Gunnink released a variety of collectables, such as picture albums. These pictures could be collected from coffee packages. Some famous titles included "The Hundred Animals Book, A Journey Around the World" and "The Wonderful Tales of Gulliver's Travels."
In 1969, Douwe Egberts acquired a majority stake in N.V. Koffiebranderij en Theehandel Kanis en Gunnink. Although the two companies had previously collaborated on technical aspects, Douwe Egberts aimed to enable further growth for Kanis & Gunnink. With approximately 3000 employees, Douwe Egberts was significantly larger than Kanis & Gunnink, which had only 120 employees. As a result of the acquisition, Kanis & Gunnink lost its "Hofleverancier" designation in 1992. Nonetheless, the company received permission to print the city crest of Kampen on their packaging.
As time passed, the situation changed, and in 2001, the factory in Kampen had to close its doors. This left only the brand name Kanis & Gunnink.
Although the factory is no longer active, the name Kanis & Gunnink remains ingrained in memory as a Dutch coffee company with a rich history that has delighted coffee lovers for generations.
