The floral decorations come to life in this refined design.

The story behind Wed. J. Bekkers & Son is as impressive as their craftsmanship. Founded in 1824 as a modest tinplate workshop, it quickly grew into a leading tin factory with international recognition. Influences from Japanese art and woodcuts between 1890 and 1910 gave the tinware a unique and beloved character. The use of lithography on tin plates, thanks to the introduction of the first tin printing press in the Netherlands in 1884, resulted in beautiful decorative designs.

The Rise of Wed. J. Bekkers & Zoon: Nostalgia in Tin Packaging

In 1824, Jacobus Bekkers started a tinplate workshop with a shop in Dordrecht. Initially, he produced household goods and soon employed several workers. Between 1840 and 1850, he began lacquering and painting tinware to prevent rust formation. His successful decorated tinware was exhibited at the International Exhibition in London (1862).

The business grew rapidly, and by 1866, there were already 93 workers in the tin factory, now known as 'de Weduwe J. Bekkers en Zoon' (Wed. J. Bekkers & Son). In 1884, Bekkers introduced the first tin printing press in the Netherlands, allowing him to apply lithography to tin plates for decoration before shaping them.

Between 1890 and 1910, the tins were inspired by Japanese art and woodcuts. In 1900, the company was converted into a public limited company. After a few challenging years, it recovered in 1907 and resumed full-scale production for both domestic and international markets.

During the period of 1910-1930, Wed. J. Bekkers & Son produced exquisite tins with art and typography for national and international markets, playing a significant role in the development of tin packaging.

With a rich history, Wed. J. Bekkers & Son continues to be a source of nostalgic charm and admiration in the world of tin packaging.
