The Origins of HEMA
HEMA, formally known as Hollandsche Eenheidsprijzen Maatschappij Amsterdam, originated from an idea by Leo Meyer and Arthur Isaac, the directors-general of N.V. Magazijn De Bijenkorf.
On a historic day, November 4, 1926, the very first HEMA store opened its doors at Kalverstraat 170 in Amsterdam. Just a few days later, a second branch followed on Oude Hoogstraat.
Inspiration from America
HEMA was inspired by the Woolworths stores in America, also known as '5 and 10 cent stores.' The concept was simple: all products were sold at fixed prices of 25 and 50 cents. Later, amounts like 10 cents, 75 cents, and one guilder were added. What set HEMA apart from other department stores was that they offered only one variant of each item.
Accessible to Everyone
HEMA positioned itself as a department store for everyone. With its competitive prices, practical assortment, and wide variety, it attracted people from different backgrounds. The staff mainly consisted of unmarried women dressed in white uniforms who worked hard, often up to 75 hours a week. Due to its low prices, HEMA was long regarded as a store for the less affluent. Wealthier Dutch citizens preferred to avoid HEMA branches.
From H.E.M.A to HEMA
After 1945, the name H.E.M.A gradually evolved into HEMA, and the fixed-price system was abandoned. In the 1950s, HEMA became one of the first franchise organizations in the Netherlands. It wasn't until 1969 that the psychological and practical barrier of prices above 100 guilders was broken. Initially, the cashiers had to ring up two amounts at the registers: fl. 99,- and the remaining amount because the cash registers were not set up for such large sums.
Innovative Growth
Over the years, HEMA grew into a beloved and innovative department store in the Netherlands and beyond. Today, the name HEMA symbolizes quality, affordability, and accessibility. Its success story began as a simple stunt store, but the formula proved to be a hit with the Dutch public.
