"The Rise and Fall of Uiltje: The History of an Iconic Dutch Cigar Brand"

Uiltje was a Dutch cigar brand that was produced until 1965 by the "La Bolsa" cigar factory in Kampen. This factory, located in Kampen, was renowned for its high-quality cigar production. On July 1, 1963, La Bolsa merged with Philips Tabak, a producer of the famous Martinez cigars, as part of a strategic collaboration between the two companies.

However, after the merger and in the subsequent years, the cigar industry faced increasing mechanization and a decline in cigar usage, resulting in reduced demand for handmade cigars. As a result, the Philips group decided to close its least profitable factory in 1965, which at that time was the Kampen-based N.V. La Bolsa cigar factory. This difficult decision led to the dismissal of employees.

The closure of N.V. La Bolsa was planned for June 1, 1965, during which the last production activities were phased out, and employees were given the opportunity to adjust to the changes. Although it marked the end of the iconic Uiltje cigar brand and production at La Bolsa, the history of this factory and the brand still serve as a reminder of an era when the cigar industry played a significant role in Dutch communities.
