De Gruyter: A Dutch Retail Chain Full of Memories
De Gruyter was a Dutch retail chain active in the 19th and 20th centuries until 1976. At its peak, the chain had over 550 stores and nearly 7,500 employees.
An essential part of their sales policy was offering a 10% discount when customers returned their receipts. Hence, their famous slogan: "En betere waar èn tien procent, alleen De Gruyter" (Better value and ten per cent off, only at De Gruyter).
To foster customer loyalty, De Gruyter started giving out small gifts to children weekly, known as the legendary "Snoepje van de week" (Sweet of the Week). This initiative began after World War II when sugar was rationed, and there was an excess of sugar. With a few guilders' worth of groceries, children were given candy without even asking for it.
