In the 1950s and 1960s, special Piggelmee editions of Van Nelle coffee and tea were produced. These editions often featured images of Kabouter Piggelmee and his wife Tureluur on the packaging. The illustrations were based on the original drawings by Rie Cramer, who brought the adventures of Kabouter Piggelmee to life in the books.

The collaboration between Kabouter Piggelmee and Van Nelle was a marketing strategy to promote the Van Nelle brand. The cheerful and recognizable figure of Kabouter Piggelmee was used to make Van Nelle products more appealing to children and families.

While the special Piggelmee editions of Van Nelle coffee and tea are no longer active, Kabouter Piggelmee remains a familiar figure in Dutch popular culture. His association with Van Nelle has contributed to the recognition and popularity of both Kabouter Piggelmee and the Van Nelle brand.

Piggelmee: An Enchanting Fairy Tale Character from the Netherlands

Piggelmee is a beloved fairy tale character who gained popularity in the Netherlands through a children's book series by the coffee company Van Nelle. The first books were written by L.C. Steenhuizen and were picture books.

The story revolves around a gnome couple named Piggelmee and Tureluur, who live in an old Cologne pot and enjoy Van Nelle coffee. They discover a magic fish that grants them wishes. Tureluur asks if there is better coffee than Van Nelle, but the fish tells her that there is no better coffee and reverses the wishes. Piggelmee and Tureluur then embark on other adventures, all related to coffee.

The history of Piggelmee begins with the Van Nelle company, which used gnomes in their advertising campaigns. An employee of the company, L.C. Steenhuizen, under the pseudonym Leopold, adapted the fairy tale "The Fisherman and His Wife" by the Brothers Grimm into a story featuring the gnome couple Piggelmee as the main character. This became the book "Van het toovervischje" (From the Magic Fish), which was published by Van Nelle in 1920. Van Nelle used Piggelmee to promote their coffee and tea.
