Zwolse Blauwvinger: A Delicious Cookie from Zwolle
Zwolle is known for many things, including a delightful treat called the Zwolse Blauwvinger. This unique cookie is named after the nickname of the residents of Zwolle: blauwvingers, which translates to "blue fingers." But where does this nickname actually come from?
This intriguing moniker has its origins in a medieval rivalry between Zwolle and the neighbouring city of Kampen. At that time, Zwolle had the Grote Kerk (Great Church), which unfortunately suffered a devastating fire. As a result, Zwolle decided to sell the church's carillon.
When the people of Kampen heard about this, they couldn't resist teaching their rivals a lesson. They paid the owed amount with the smallest possible denomination of coins, forcing the Zwollenaren to count numerous coins. The act of counting all those coins led to the Zwollenaren getting blue fingers.
By the way, the recipe for the Zwolse Blauwvinger is similar to that of a spritz cookie.
