Stratego Game Rules
At the beginning of the game, a red army and a blue army face each other, each consisting of 40 pieces of different ranks. The goal is to capture the opponent's flag or render the opponent unable to move. Pieces can move back and forth a maximum of 5 times before the player must make a different move.
The red army starts. In each turn, each piece can only move one square horizontally or vertically on the board. There are a few exceptions: the scout can move as far as possible both horizontally and vertically, while the flag and bombs cannot move at all. Pieces cannot jump over each other.
The pieces are arranged in a way that the player on the other side of the board cannot see where the opponent's pieces are located. Only when a piece attacks another piece by stepping on the same square, the ranks of both pieces are revealed. In general, the higher-ranked piece wins and the other piece is removed from the board. If both pieces have the same rank, both are removed.
There are two exceptions:
- If the spy, the lowest-ranked piece, attacks the marshal (the highest-ranked piece), the marshal is defeated. However, if the marshal attacks the spy, the spy is eliminated from the board.
- A bomb is only removed if it is attacked by a miner.
Bombs and the flag cannot be moved once placed. A bomb eliminates any opposing piece that tries to attack it, except for the miner. The flag loses to any piece, and capturing the flag is also the objective of the game: the player who first touches the opponent's flag with any piece wins.
The Board:
The board consists of a 10x10 grid. Within the board, there are two lakes of 2x2 squares where pieces cannot enter.
The Pieces:
On the game board, pieces can be placed at the player's discretion. Here are the quantities and ranks from highest to lowest:
- 1 Marshal
- 1 General
- 2 Colonels
- 3 Majors
- 4 Captains
- 4 Lieutenants
- 4 Sergeants
- 5 Miners
- 8 Scouts
- 1 Spy
- 6 Bombs
- 1 Flag
