Gestampte Muisjes (Crushed Mice) is a bread spread that is particularly popular in the Netherlands and is virtually unknown in other countries. Crushed Mice is made from aniseed and sugar and has a flavour similar to aniseed sprinkles and aniseed candies. It is made by grinding the mice finely. The wordmark "Muisjes" is a registered trademark of Royal De Ruijter B.V.

The mice from De Ruijter were well-received by the affluent middle class. Especially when some elderly ladies, who found the sugared aniseed seeds too hard for their teeth, gave De Ruijter the idea to crush the mice in a mortar. This is how crushed mice were created. Nowadays, crushed mice are still made by crushing pink, blue, and white mice (sprinkles).

Note: "Muisjes" refers to small aniseed sprinkles commonly used in the Netherlands as a topping for bread and other baked goods. The term "mice" is used metaphorically here to describe the small size and shape of the aniseed sprinkles.

Koninklijke De Ruijter is a proud producer of delicious Dutch bread spreads that have been beloved by young and old for generations. With a rich history dating back to 1860, this company has made its mark on the Dutch breakfast table.

Offering a range of tasty options such as chocolate sprinkles, fruit sprinkles, mice (aniseed sprinkles), chocolate flakes, aniseed hail, and crushed mice, De Ruijter knows how to transform our bread into true works of art. Since its establishment by C.R. (Cees) de Ruijter himself in 1860, the company has upheld the title "De Ruijter, the bread decorator since 1860."

The origin of De Ruijter can be traced back to a bakery opened by Cornelis Rutgerus de Ruijter in 1860, located at Brinkstraat, number C108 in Baarn. It was there that he started selling birth mice (aniseed sprinkles), a tradition that continues to this day.

The growth of De Ruijter led to the expansion of the factory in 1928, which found its new home on D'Aulnis de Bourouilllaan in Baarn. Here, the company began the production of aniseed candies and fruit sprinkles, further diversifying its product range. In 1955, De Ruijter acquired the chocolate factory of Campen in Alkmaar and started producing delicious chocolate flakes. Two years later, in 1957, De Ruijter also acquired the chocolate factory Erven de Jong in Wormerveer, marking the beginning of chocolate sprinkles production.

Recognition of De Ruijter's quality and craftsmanship came in 1883 when King Willem III appointed the company as a supplier to the royal court. And on the occasion of its 125th anniversary in 1985, De Ruijter was honoured with the prestigious title "Koninklijk" (Royal).

With a rich tradition, high-quality products, and a passion for decorating our daily bread, Koninklijke De Ruijter remains an indispensable part of Dutch culinary history.
