Bakkerij B. Hus: An Iconic Dutch Bakery
Bakkerij B. Hus, founded in 1915 and active until 1987, was a well-known Dutch bread and pastry bakery that provided delicious bakery products to The Hague and a large part of the Netherlands. The bakery was often simply referred to as "Hus" by the locals. From 1971 to 1987, the largest bakery in the Netherlands was located in Rijswijk, known as the Hus bakery.
In 1970, the company had a staggering 165 branches and employed 1,350 workers. In 1971, Meneba, a food company, opened the largest bread, cake, pastry, and biscuit factory in the Netherlands in the Plaspoelpolder area of Rijswijk. This factory was named Hus-Lensvelt Bakkerijen B.V. and covered an area of 23,000 square meters. After its opening, the factories located on Jacob Catsstraat and Ootmarsumstraat were closed. In addition to customers from the surrounding areas, the United States Army, stationed in West Germany until 1985, was the bakery's largest customer.
Due to unprofitable exports to Germany, the factory had to reduce its workforce by 150 employees. In 1987, Meneba made the decision to close the Hus-Lensvelt factory and relocate it to another struggling Meneba factory in Rotterdam, formerly known as Van der Meer & Schoep. This consolidation allowed them to compete better. Today, this abandoned factory complex is known as De Broodfabriek Expo & Event Center.
The bakery also provided home delivery of bread and other bakery products. Initially, this was done by bicycle with a wicker basket in the front, later with a cargo bike and wooden bread carts, and eventually with electric delivery vans from Spijkstaal.
Some of Hus's most famous bread products were:
- Zeeuwse tarwebrood, also known as 'Allinsonbrood'.
- King Corn Bread, which became popular through television commercials.
- Tarvo malt bread.
- Tip-Top white bread.
An interesting fact is that in 1964, it was discovered that the rolls of biscuits from Hus and Lensvelt-Nicola contained only 12 biscuits instead of the usual 13. According to the management, there was no deliberate intention, and it was attributed to the fact that the biscuits were thicker than usual.
Bakkerij B. Hus played a prominent role in the Dutch bakery sector throughout its existence, and its delicious products provided many people with tasty treats for years. Unfortunately, Bakkerij B. Hus is no longer active in the present day. However, it remains an iconic part of Dutch bakery history, with its large factory and extensive range of bread and pastry products. While the factory may have closed, the memories of Hus's delightful products continue to live on in the minds and hearts of those who have tasted them.
