Douwe Egberts, abbreviated as DE, is a Dutch company that has been active in the processing and trade of coffee, tea, and other food products since 1753.
The origins of Douwe Egberts can be traced back to Egbert Douwes and his wife Akke Thysses. In 1753, they moved from their birthplace of Idskenhuizen to Joure, where they opened a "store in colonial goods" on March 11. In addition to groceries, chocolate, and dried fruits, they also sold products that contributed to daily enjoyment.
In 1780, the company was handed over to their son, Douwe Egberts (1755-1806), whose name continues to live on in the company today. Together with his wife Ymke Jacobs Visser, he was responsible for processing and blending coffee, tea, and tobacco.
Under the leadership of Douwe Egberts, the company expanded beyond the borders of Joure. He gave his name to the company and laid the foundation for its expansion. After Douwe Egberts' death in 1806, his second wife, Lysbeth Mintjes, continued the business.
Douwe Egberts also played an essential role in the establishment of the Haulsterbossen forest.
After World War II, Douwe Egberts embarked on international expansion by opening branches in France, Spain, and Denmark. Belgium was also added to the growing list of countries where the company was active starting in 1948.
